Start as early as possible - Story of ClapOrSlap

Hello ! Who are you and what are you working on?

We are two brothers - Siddhant and Gautam, and are also the founders of ClapOrSlap. We both are makers and we love building products.

We are currently building ClapOrSlap which is a fun way to discover new products.

What motivated you to get started with? How did you come up with the idea?

We launched a few products earlier where the product didn’t get much eyeballs. After talking to a lot of makers, we realised that this is a common problem, simply because of the fact that a lot of product discovery sites tend to influence their audience’s decision by showing the number of upvotes, even before the user has decided which product they want to upvote.

Users therefore unconsciously tend to prefer the products which are already upvoted by the masses, causing a bandwagon effect. Removing this bias from the Product Discovery websites is our main motivation to work on

Can you tell us the story of your business from idea to where you are now?

We just started working on our product a few weeks back. We are also taking entries for the product launches here

What has been your biggest failure or struggle?

As makers, we sometimes struggle to keep up the momentum when things are not going that well. To solve this, we built WisdomBarOSX, a mac menu bar app which generates motivational quotes from famous entrepreneurs.

And what has been your biggest achievement or success?

We have launched half a dozen products in a short amount of time :)

Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?

Getting Personal and genuine feedback has helped us to engage with our users.

Describe the process of launching the business.

Initially we thought of it as just a cool weekend side project. So we designed, coded and launched it in 2 days.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome? What are your goals for the future?

We feel Launching is the easy part, finding Product Market Fit is the challenging part. Our goal is to grow ClapOrSlap so that it provides a level-playing field for every maker !

How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

We are in a point of time where anyone with a willingness can start something of his own and make money doing what they love to do. We have high hopes for us and the whole maker community's future.

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous ?

We cannot stress enough on the importance of being in the network of like minded people. Also don't hesitate to ask for help, you will be surprised by how helpful people are. I would really like to thank the Maker Kitchen community for being so supportive and responsive.

What platform/tools do you use for your business ?

We use Slack for collaboration and figma for designing.

Who’s your most inspirational CEO or founder?

For Gautam its Jack Dorsey and for me it's Naval Ravikant.

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

Naval's Podcasts are a gem. Also Nir Eyal's Hooked book and Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari are some of our favourites.

We have compiled over 200+ wisdom bites that we discovered through watching videos, reading books and listening to podcasts into WisdomBarOSX ( Feel free to check it out and tell us your favourite quote :).

What’s your advice for fellow aspiring entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

Networking and Reaching out : Genuinely help people achieve their goals and let them help you achieve yours.

Pro Tip : Start as early as possible. We wished we could have started this back in college.
