Hello ! Who are you and what are you working on?
Hi I'm Harry Dry and I'm working on MarketingExamples.com
What motivated you to get started with? How did you come up with the idea?
I love marketing. I wanted to work on my own project.
Can you tell us the story of your business from idea to where you are now?
I left my job as a web developer in London to start a marketing blog. I got a sponsor it, and the website's audience grew and grew and now I have 26k Twitter followers and an email list of 14k, who read my weekly marketing case studies.
What has been your biggest failure or struggle?
Probably growing the email list as such a fast pace. It's relentless and quite tough to grow.
And what has been your biggest achievement or success?
The quality of the articles I put out. The website is full of excellence.
Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?
Building an email newsletter has been a really big deal. That way I get my audience coming back every week ...
Describe the process of launching the business.
I believe in launching early and launching quietly. No big deal. Just get it out there ASAP.
Did you use Betalist or PH or other Startup Launching Platform for Launching ? How was that experience ?
I used Product Hunt. It worked really well and I got 2000 new email subscribers. I actually wrote about that strategy in detail here
What’s your business model, and how have you grown your revenue?
Currently just sponsorship revenue. Hopefully in the future I can derive a better income from my audience.
What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome? What are your goals for the future?
Honestly, this sounds weird. But I haven't encountered anything rough. Possibly getting attacked on Twitter by a mob once, but that's nothing serious ...
Let’s talk about your marketing strategy -- how do you market MarketingExample and grow the service?
Every article I write is a mini-launch by itself. Another 1000 people flock to the website. That's why any content related business is great. Because you get that launch spike every time you write something new ...
Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?
Of course. I have learned that direction is more important than speed. if you're moving in the right direction, just keep chopping away and you'll make it.
What platform/tools do you use for your business?
Email Octopus for emails. Heroku for hosting. That's pretty much it.
Who’s your most inspirational CEO or founder?
What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?
Mans search for meaning, my parents, my brothers, yoga ...
What’s your advice for fellow aspiring entrepreneur who are just starting out?
work on yourself. more information isn't the answer. work on building your focus / determination / resilience / kindness. Fundamental human qualities. They'll then rub off into your business ...
