How Peter Thaleikis started a Startup Name Checking Utility

Hello ! Who are you and what are you working on?

I'm Peter and working on a number of side projects. It started all with a name validator for startups and side projects and extended now to, a browser extension called Which Login. More recently Bite Sized Insights - a statistic and information aggregator. More are in work and coming soon - stay tuned!

What motivated you to get started with? How do you come up with ideas?

I’m usually solving my own issues without looking too much at what other people do or want. If it grabs some attention that's great, if not that’s fine too.

Can you tell us the story of your business from idea to where you are now?

With Startup Name Check, I was out of work for a little bit and thought I should try to do something myself. At this time I checked a lot of ideas and found competitors via checking names - the process was time consuming tho. So I decided to build a little tool to validate the name ideas quicker. As mentioned, solving my own pain.

What has been your biggest failure or struggle?

Marketing has been the issue from day one really. And I’ve seen this for many indie hackers. My newest project in the family, Where To Post - a newsletter with small pieces of marketing advice for founders and makers alike, is addressing this. For myself as well as for others. I hope to solve my problems by writing about it and sharing it.

And what has been your biggest achievement or success?

The connections with other makers are really rewarding. I like chatting about projects and helping out. Often it is just a few emails, but something you get really deep into conversations about detailed topics.

Describe the process of launching the business.

This is exactly what the archive for Where To Post does. It describes my launching processes.

Did you use Betalist or PH or other Startup Launching Platform for Launching ? How was that experience ?

ProductHunt was and still is a great source for traffic. I didn't get anything from BetaList as I didn't want to pay the fee.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome? What are your goals for the future?

Marketing, still and probably will remain an issue, still.

Let’s talk about your marketing strategy -- how do you market and grow your products?

Mostly learning about SEO and getting better step by step. Mentioning along the way helps a lot.

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

Asking for help from your online friends and family is very important. If you don't ask people, they won't know you need help.

What platform/tools do you use for your business?

No new fancy tech. Solid stuff like Laravel, SilverStripe and VueJS mostly. Hosting either on Forge or Netlify. Hint: Check this, if you need to get SilverStripe working on Forge.

Who’s your most inspirational CEO or founder?

Elon Musk's work-ethic is mindblowing. I wish I had such an work-ethic. But it’s also scary haha.

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

"The Venture Adventure: Strategies for Thriving in the Jungle of Entrepreneurship" by Daryl Bernstein was and is my most influential book.

What’s your advice for fellow aspiring entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

Try out things and talk to people, validate your idea with as many people as possible before starting out. Don't do things that have been done hundreds of times or solve problems you need to explain too much. Simple is better.
